Renewable Energy Scotland

Air source pumps offer an alternative way to heat your home or business. Heat pumps utilise a renewable energy source by absorbing latent warmth in the air. Switching to an air source heat pump could save money on energy bills and lower your carbon impact. Air source heat pumps are an affordable, practical and environmentally responsible solution.

The McInnes Group team can design and install the most effective air source heating system for your property. The systems we install are correctly sized and scoped to the latest MCS Standard. This is guaranteed to provide the highest possible return on investment, whether for a domestic or commercial property.

  • Planning permission for an air source heat pump is not usually required, but if you live in a listed building or conservation area, you will probably need to ask the local authority if restrictions apply. You should also check that your installation meets the building regulations in your area.
  • It is best practice to improve insulation levels prior to installing any new heating appliance. This typically means a smaller heat pump is required with less radiator upgrades.
  • An Air source heat pump with a good design, specification and installation can heat any building with any standard of insulation. The larger the heat loss generally the higher the cost of heat pump installation. This is also true of any heating technology currently available.
  • 0% funding (loans) is available in Scotland from Home Energy Scotland with grants of £7500 in Scotland and up to £9000 in rural areas. Read More.

What is an Air Source Heat Pump?

Air Source Heat Pumps (ASHPs) extract heat from the air and boost it to a higher temperature using a compressor. The system then transfers the heat to the heating system in your home. They work a bit like refrigerators in reverse.

An air source heat pump system is compatible with both radiators and underfloor heating systems. If you’re interested in installing an air source heat pump, here are a few tips.

There are a few points worth considering, including:

  • Due to lower water temperatures required, air source heat pumps perform well with underfloor heating & radiators. In some cases larger radiators & upgraded pipework is required.
  • Air source heating systems can be installed on the ground or on a wall.
  • The outside unit requires enough space around it to get a good flow of air.
  • Air source heat pumps can provide all the hot water requirements. A hot water cylinder and a suitable internal space will be required.
